What is the Konza Prairie?
The Konza Prairie Biological Station, located just south of Manhattan, KS, is a 8,600 acre site devoted to a 3-pronged mission of research, education and conservation. It is the only such site of its type that is located in the highly imperilled tallgrass prairie ecosystem. Over 96% of the original tallgrass prairie system has been converted, mostly into agricultural fields or neighborhoods, and large tracts of intact prairie are very rare. Research at the site is wide and varied with much of it focused on the effects of climate change on the tallgrass prairie system.
The Konza Environmental Education Program at Konza Prairie works to bring Kansas school children to the tallgrass prairie. Work is centered on introducing children to the prairie in an effort to have them see what's going on, understand the processes better, and to develop a new appreciation for this amazing ecosystem.
